You've probably come across the term a few times.
Fancy Surprise, Fancy A La Mode, Fancy goods...
But it doesn't seem to be the same "Fancy" as Fancy Dress, so what is it?
Fancy actually has it's own meaning in Japan and today I'll be explaining exactly what it means!

- 一般に「ファンシー」という場合、少女趣味と結び付けられることが多い。
ファンシーグッズは単なる装飾品というよりも、主に15歳以下の子ども向けの、可愛い装飾がこらされたりキャラクターが印刷された商品をさすことがある。こうした製品を販売する店舗を「ファンシーショップ」という。 - "Fancy" is generally used in reference to girls hobbies. The term "Fancy Goods" is often used to refer to cute decorations and printed characters aimed at girls under 15, as opposed to regular decorative goods. Shops that specalise in this genre are called "Fancy Shops".
- 日本語で「ファンシー」というと、「女子が好む可愛らしいデザイン」という意味で使われることが多いですよね。 「ファンシー」は、「ゆめかわいい」という言葉で表現されることもあります。 イメージでいうと、ピンクや白、淡い紫などの色が連想されます。 しかし、英語「fancy」はこのような意味では使いません。
- In Japanese, "Fancy" refers to "A cute design loved by girls". "Fancy" is also often expressed through Yumekawaii. It usually features pinks, whites, and lavender shades. However, "Fancy" has a different meaning in English.
- ファンシーは若い女性が好みそうな、ふわふわとした可愛らしい雰囲気のことを意味するため、淡いピンクの部屋にテディベアがあふれかえり、天蓋のついたベッドに大きいシャンデリア、そんな部屋のことをファンシーな部屋、と表現することもあります。これらを統一すると、『ファンシー=乙女チック』だという捉え方でも問題はないでしょう。

Fancy is also often combined with the keywords メルヘン, which means Märchen, or Fairytale in Old German. Most Fancy goods also have a retro or historical European appearence.
