PLUS SIZE FAIRY KEI GUIDE 2019 (Fairy-Tips)

Plus Size Fairy Kei Guide (Updated October 2019)

The updated Fairy-Tips guide to plus size fairy kei! I’ll be linking some of the cutest shops and answering some of your frequently asked questions. I hope it helps!

TUMBLR SUCKS so I moved the guide here.

My most important piece of advice is to CHECK YOUR MEASUREMENTS. This is especially important when shopping online because it’ll prevent you from buying an item which doesn’t fit - Just because you’ve selected your normal size, doesn’t mean it’ll fit! Just because it's a Japanese brand doesn't mean it won't fit!
By comparing your measurements with those on the website you’ll know for sure if it’ll fit and you won’t waste your time/money sending it back. This is especially important with Asian clothing import stores because the sizes are very different to those in the west.
European sizes also run a little smaller than US sizes, so compare your measurements to those on the website and pick the size that suits you, even if you don’t normally wear that size.
Be aware of "Flat Measurements" too - These are commonly used on Japanese websites. If it seems absurdly small (a 40cm waist?) then it's usually a flat measurement. To work out the full size, just double the measurement to find the full circumference of whatever you're looking at.

Important note: Avoid shopping from stores that claim to also stock k/ink items. EVen if you are into that kind of thing, please don’t associate it with fairy kei! (I only say this bc a certain shop pops up when you google plus size fairy kei, don’t send me messages abt shaming)

☆Common Questions☆

Q: Can I wear fairy kei if I'm plus size?
A: Of course, fairy kei is for everybody! The only rule is to achieve the fairy feeling with a dreamy pastel outfit. Size doesn't matter!

Q: Is it hard to be plus size and wear fairy kei?
A: I'll be real - Because fairy kei originated in Japan, a lot of the iconic brands are Japanese. This means that many of the super famous iconic brands aren't plus size friendly. This can cause problems because you'll find it's harder to find clothes... but that doesn't mean you can't wear fairy kei! It just means you need to find the brands that DO stock a wider range of sizes. Luckily there are lots of cute brands in the west stocking adorable plus size items, so you can fill up your wardrobe with dreamy items! You can also often find Japanese brands producing oversized items which often work perfectly for plus size fairies (for example, the cotton candy sweater is plus size friendly despite being from a Japanese brand). Legwear can be tougher and I would recommend avoiding Japanese brands. However, there are a variety of shops stocking legwear perfectly suited for plus size folks! You can find both printed and basic designs for the perfect fancy look.

Q: I have a larger-than-average shoe size and it's hard to find cute fairy shoes. What should I do?
A: You can find plus size lolita-style shoes from Bodyline and An-Tai-Na, however the latter stocks replicas so be very careful when picking a pair (fairy-tips does not support replicas!!). Another option for the classic Spank!/Fairy look is a cute pastel pair of trainers (or sneakers). You can find pastel trainers from most mainstream brands and all you have to do is switch out the laces to an organza/ribbon to transform a pastel pair of high-tops into an adorable pair of fairy shoes! Pastel Dr Martens are also perfect. Keep an open mind and you'll quickly find the perfect pair of shoes for your style.
